Augusta Takes The Series Over Lander With 7-2 Win On Senior Day

AIKEN, S.C. – The Augusta University baseball team wrapped up Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Lander Bearcats and responded from a game-two loss to win 7-2 with 13 hits.

 
 

Augusta (19-24, 10-14 PBC) pulled out a 16-15 win over Lander (20-27, 11-13 PBC) in game one of the series on Friday night with a season high 19 hits.

 

The Jaguars celebrated 2017 Senior Day in between games of the doubleheader on Saturday and honored seniors Jamal Cummings, Clint Hardy, Cole Janousek, Tristan Jones, Matthew Kuhlenberg, Cody Lanford, Cody Pugh, Tyler Roberts, Joey Stillwell, Will Thompson, and Chance Warnock.

 

In game one the Bearcats led 9-0 into the fourth inning, before Augusta scratched two across when Lanford scored on an error and Roberts on a groundball to second base.

 

AU trailed 12-2 in the bottom of the seventh, when freshman Jake Bogosian the first homer of his career to score Janousek. Lander went on to total 19 hits and win 17-4.

 

Augusta senior Will Thompson (2-3) made his 12th start of the year and went 1.2 innings, before senior Matthew Kuhlenberg struck out four in 4.1 innings pitched with six hits for four runs (three earned). Junior David Hagelston pitched two innings and junior Jordan Kelly closed it out with an inning of work.

 

Lander's Cameron Tekker (5-1) started game one on the mound and pitched a complete game to hold AU to six hits with four strikeouts. Colton Yeagar, Alex Conaway, Nathan Schreckengost, Bailey Connell, and Alex Dowell each had three hits for LU in game one.

 

In the second meeting of the doubleheader and the final game of the series, Pugh (5-0) earned the start for Augusta and pitched his first complete game of the season. Pugh struck out nine batters and held LU to two runs.

 

AU freshman Davis Murray delivered an RBI single through the right side to score Evans for a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two, but Lander hit their fourth homer of the series for a 2-1 switch in the third.

 

Augusta answered with one in the third and two in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead and went on to win 7-2. Warnock was 1-for-1 with a scored run and Hardy and Cummings each had two hits to highlight game two.

 

Lander tried six different pitchers against the Jaguars, with Tripper Ergle getting the loss.
