Augusta Baseball Opens Series With 9-4 Win Over Armstrong

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted the Armstrong State Pirates for game one of the Peach Belt Conference series on Friday night and the Jaguars won 9-4 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The game was dubbed Greek Life Night with the Jags and hundreds of Augusta University students from the 12 fraternities and sororities attended the game under the lights!

Augusta (11-14, 5-8 PBC) put up 13 hits to Armstrong's (14-12, 0-7 PBC) nine to help out senior starting pitcher Tristan Jones.

Jones (4-3) started the eighth game of his senior season and pitched six innings to hold the Pirates to one run on eight hits. He struck out three in his 21 batters faced and capped it off with a successful on-field proposal to girlfriend Lindsay George!

Senior Cody Pugh tossed one inning and struck out three to allow no hits, before junior David Hagelston and sophomore Chase Slone slung an inning each.

AU's three leadoff batters combined for seven hits. Senior Clint Hardy was 2-5 with a three-run home run, senior Tyler Roberts enjoyed a 3-4 day, and senior Cody Lanford logged two hits and scored twice.

Freshman Carrington Evans went 3-4 with two RBI and junior Jim Wagner carded a pair of knocks to score twice for Augusta.

Armstrong lefty Sam Goberdhan (3-2) pitched 6.1 innings and gave up 13 hits for nine runs (eight earned). Mike Warren and Chandler Corley each had two hits in the game for the Pirates.

The Jags took a one-run lead in their first at bat when senior Cole Janousek scored Roberts on an opposite-field single. An inning later AU was up 2-0 after they carded one in the third and they plated five runs in the fourth to lead 7-0.

Hardy hammered a line-drive home run down the left-field line to score three, after the Jags opened the inning with three hits. Augusta had three base-hit bunts in two innings.

Armstrong ruined the shutout in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1, but Jones got out of the inning with a groundball double play.

Chandler Corley gave the Pirates more runs in the eighth when Hagelston gave up a homer, but Slone closed it out to seal a 9-4 Jaguar win.

Augusta returns to LOS on Saturday, March 25 for a doubleheader against Armstrong beginning at 1:00 p.m. for Peach Belt action.
