Augusta Slips To GSW In Peach Belt Double Feature

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted Georgia Southwestern for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon and fell 8-5 game one and 4-0 in game two at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

 

Augusta (6-9, 2-3 PBC) took game one of the series over Georgia Southwestern (6-11, 1-4 PBC) on Friday night, but the Hurricanes stole two games in the second and third meetings.

 

Lefty Will Thompson started on the mound for Augusta in game one and logged six innings in his fifth start of the year. The senior struck out seven and allowed eight hits for four runs (two earned). Junior reliever Casey Lenoch (1-1) tossed one inning and surrendered two hits for a go-ahead run.

 

GSW took another early lead with two runs in the third inning, but AU answered with a pair in the fourth to tie the contest. The first lead of the day went to the Jaguars in the fifth when Cole Janousek scored Lanford on a knock to left field.

 

Up 4-2, Augusta gave up three in the seventh and three in the eighth. They went on to fall 8-5.

 

Jordan McIlwain (2-2) made the start for the Canes and carded 6.2 innings to give up four runs on six hits in the win. Mitch Holloway grabbed his third save of the season for GSW. Jared Jones led the Canes' bats with a 3-5 day in game.

 

Janousek was 2-5 in game one with two walks and junior Ty Hobbs knocked two hits with an RBI and run.

 

In game two, the Canes carded the first lead of the game with two runs in the first and fourth. The Canes' Dylan Brown (1-3) had a no hitter through six innings, but Augusta senior Tyler Roberts roped a single in the seventh to break it open.

 

Brown went seven innings and struck out seven while allowing two hits as the Canes held off Augusta to win 4-0.

Sophomore slinger Chase Slone (0-1) started his second game of the season in game two of the DH and pitched 4.0 innings. Slone gave up four hits for four runs (two earned) and struck out three. Senior Matthew Kuhlenberg and junior David Hagelston each pitched for the Jags and held the Canes scoreless.

 

Kuhlenberg logged three innings and struck out two, while Hagelston tossed two.

 

AU hosts Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday, March 7 for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
