Augusta Owns Georgia Southwestern In Conference Home Opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted its first Peach Belt Conference game of the season on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium against Georgia Southwestern and won a 10-5 game under the lights.

 

The game was dubbed CSRA First Responders Night and all police officers, deputy sheriffs, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and rescuers were admitted free by showing a certified ID/license. Family members of the first responders were free as well!

 

Augusta (6-8, 2-2 PBC) trailed Georgia Southwestern (5-11, 0-4 PBC) after the first inning, but steady pitching and explosive offense reversed the score to give the home team the big win.

 

Senior Tristan Jones (3-2) started his fourth game of the season and went seven innings to allow eight hits for five runs while posting two strikeouts. Juniors Casey Lenoch and Jordan Kelly each came in to log innings late in the game.

 

Senior Cole Janousek went 3-5 with two RBI – highlighted by a triple and double. Senior Cody Lanford was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI and junior Jim Wagner carded a pair of hits.

 

GSW scored one in the first inning on a sac fly and a two-run homer from Jonathan Martin made it 3-0 for the Canes. AU responded when junior Jamal Cummings blasted his first home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field in the bottom of the second.

 

In the fourth, the Jags stole a 4-3 lead on Will Zimmer's hit to left field. Ty Hobbs scored from third and Adam Spurlin took home on an overthrow from the outfield. AU totaled five runs in the huge fourth inning and built a 7-4 lead.

 

Back-to-back triples in the sixth from Janousek and Wagner willed AU on top 9-4 and they went on to win by five.

 

GSW started pitcher Kyle Spinks (0-2) and he went 3.1 innings to give up seven hits for seven runs (two earned). Offensively, the Canes were carried by Evan Alderman who went 4-4.

Augusta returns to Lake Olmstead on Saturday, March 4 for a 1:00 p.m. PBC doubleheader against the Canes.
