Big Ninth Inning Wills Augusta To 9-6 Win At Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Augusta University baseball team scored five runs in the ninth inning to win a 9-6 non-conference game over the Catawba Indians on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park.

 

Augusta (15-17) scored nine runs on 12 hits, while Catawba (25-10) managed six runs on 15 hits.

 

Will Thompson made his ninth start of the year and went six innings and struck out three. Thompson gave up nine hits for three runs (two earned), before senior Joey Stillwell pitched the last three innings to get a win. Stillwell (1-1) gave up six hits for three runs with a strikeout.

 

Freshman Carrington Evans opened scoring on the day with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. Augusta added a pair in the third, but Catawba put up two in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game.

 

AU sophomore Will Zimmer reached first base on a walk in the seventh inning and made it to third after a wild pitch and fielder's choice. Senior Cody Lanford laced an infield single to plate the go-ahead run and give the Jags a 4-3 lead.

 

Luke Setzer homered for the Indians in the eighth inning to knot the contest, but Augusta exploded in the ninth for the win.

 

Lanford was 3-4 with two runs and an RBI and seniors Tyler Roberts, Cole Janousek, and junior Ty Hobbs put up two hits each for Augusta.

 

Catawba used six pitchers in the game, with starter Bryan Ketchie tossing 6.1 innings. Jeremy Simpson and Chance Bowden each had three hits for the Indians in the loss.

 

The Jags play at Erskine on Wednesday, April 5 for a single game at 3:00 p.m. in Due West, S.C.
