Augusta Baseball Walks Off West Georgia In 4-3 Finale

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team met the West Georgia Wolves for the fifth time in 10 days on Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead and drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the ninth inning to win 4-3 in non-conference action.

Augusta moves to 2-4 on the season, while the Wolves go to 4-2 with the loss.

Senior southpaw-slinger Will Thompson logged 6.0 innings in his second start of the season and struck out four batters while giving up six hits for two runs. Preseason All-Conference honoree Casey Lenoch (1-0) pitched for AU in relief and went 3.0 innings to allow three hits for a run in the win.

The Jags' offense was anchored by freshman Davis Murray and senior Tyler Roberts who each went 2-4. Freshman Adam Spurlin, senior Cody Lanford, and junior Ty Hobbs all had one hit and an RBI as well.

The Wolves scored first when Christopher Michels tripled off the left-centerfield wall to score Price Peters in the second inning for a 1-0 UWG lead. Michels added an RBI single in the fourth for a two run lead.

The Jags tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, when Hobbs hammered home Jim Wagner and Lanford plated Spurlin with back-to-back singles.

With the game tied 2-2 in the eighth, the Wolves added another run when Michels carded his third RBI with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. AU rallied in the next at bat and Adam Spurlin delivered a game-tying, opposite-field single.

Augusta loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and Murray was hit by the pitch to win a 4-3 game.

UWG's Russell Klein went 3.2 innings in the start and surrendered four hits for a run and struck out four. Ryan Sapp relieved the Wolves and also went 3.2 innings before Mitchell Mannino made an appearance in the eighth. Colton Duttweiler (1-1) got the loss for UWG.
