Augusta Falls 9-8 To Newberry In 17-Inning Slugfest

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted the Newberry Wolves for a midweek non-conference game on Wednesday at Lake Olmstead Stadium and played 17 innings to fall 9-8 in a marathon battle. Each team played 23 athletes in a game that over five hours long. It was the second extra-inning game for AU this season.

 

Augusta moved to 5-8 overall while the Wolves went to 9-8 on the year. Newberry made six errors to the Jags' four, but the Wolves put up 15 hits to Augusta's 13.

 

Each team matched 10 hits for a 7-7 tie score after regulation and took the game into the 16th inning when the Wolves scored one. Augusta matched it with a lone run for an 8-8 lead in the 16th, but Newberry notched another in the 17th for the one-run win.

 

A combined total of 14 pitchers recorded innings in the game, with Augusta using eight and Newberry six.

 

The Jags were led offensively by seniors Cole Janousek and Tyler Roberts who each had three hits. Roberts recorded two RBI and a run, while juniors Jim Wagner and Ty Hobbs each had two hits.

 

Junior David Hagelston (0-3) got the loss for Augusta and Dylan Southerland (1-1) grabbed the Newberry win.

 

AU put runners on second and third in the first inning when senior Cody Lanford and Wagner reached in their first at bats. Two Newberry infield errors gave the Jags a 1-0 lead that wouldn't last. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly ball for Newberry tied the game 1-1 in the top of the second and they knocked four hits for five runs in the third to take a 6-1 swing.

 

The Jags exploded for a five-run fifth inning to knot the game 6-6. Wagner doubled to start the inning and Janousek, Will Zimmer, Hobbs, and Roberts all knocked singles in the big inning.

 

Ben Herring raked a single in the fifth to plate Peyton Spangler for a 7-6 Newberry advantage, but senior Cody Lanford tied the game 7-7 on a single in the eighth. The Wolves survived in extra innings for the victory.

 

Newberry's Derek Olenchuk went 3-4 and Trejon Smith was 3-8.

 

The Jags host a Peach Belt Conference game against Georgia Southwestern at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3 and all first responders from the CSRA will be admitted free of charge to cheer on the Jaguars at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
