Augusta Defeated 6-1 In Season Opener At West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga., - The Augusta University baseball team broke open the 2017 season on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 non-conference loss to the West Georgia Wolves on Cole Field.

 

The 2017 Augusta (0-1) opening day starting lineup featured senior Cody Lanford (2B), junior Jim Wagner (LF), senior Clint Hardy (CF), junior Ty Hobbs (1B), junior Brent Alford (C), sophomore Will Zimmer (RF), freshman Adam Spurlin (3B), freshman Davis Murray (DH), senior Tyler Roberts (SS), and senior Tristan Jones as the starting pitcher.

 

Tristan Jones made the 14th start of his career and his 47th appearance overall as he earned the start on the mound for the Jaguars. Jones went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out six. Junior Casey Lenoch made a relief appearance in 2.0 innings and sophomore Chase Slone slung an inning to close the game. Lenoch and Slone each allowed two runs but one of them was earned.

 

Hardy and Spurlin led the Jags with 2-for-4 days at the plate. Roberts recorded one hit as well to round out the five hits for AU. UWG knocked 12 hits. Ben Utley had three hits and Ryan Raper and Chris Michaels two each.

 

Greyson McLeod picked up the win for the Wolves 6.0 innings of work.

 

UWG drew a hit-by-pitch in their first at bat of the game that led to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Spurlin doubled for Augusta in the second inning to score Alford and the deficit was cut in half. The Wolves withstood the Jags and added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of single and infield error.

 

Each team had three errors, while UWG left nine men on base to AU's eight.

 

Augusta continues the non-conference series on Saturday, Feb. 4 with a 2:00 p.m. single game in Carrollton, Ga.
