Erskine Edges ASU

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State dropped a non-conference single game at home to Erskine 11-2 before falling by one run in the seventh inning of game two 7-6 on Jaguar Field Tuesday afternoon.

Erskine jumped on ASU (10-30) starter Jamie Suggs (0-2) in the first inning off an RBI-single and grand slam from Brandon Wooten for a 5-0 lead. The Flying Fleet (23-18) added two in the third on a two-run double and Dylan Wall took over the mound for the Jags. Wall threw 4.2 innings, giving up four hits for one run, while Suggs took the loss in 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and dealing two strikeouts.

Ross Miles reached on an Erskine error in the fifth and Hunter Boose hit an RBI-double to score ASU's first run for a 7-1 game. The Fleet put two on in the seventh from Will Huff's RBI-single with two outs. Boose solo homered in the bottom of the seventh to get one back, but ASU was unable to break the deficit, falling 11-2.

Austin Gambrell (1-0) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing five hits for one run in the win, before Chase Norman relieved in the fifth. ASU's Tyler Ross and David Bermudez also made appearances out of the bullpen. Drew Willingham, Logan Galliher, Will Huff, and Hanlon Maivelett all went 3-for-4 in game one for Erskine, while Boose was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and run for ASU and Nate Crown was 2-for-3.

Boose gave the Jags a 1-0 lead in game two with his second homer of the day, but Wooten blasted a two-run homer for Erskine to steal a 2-1 lead in the second. Another long ball from ASU's Logan South put the Jags up 3-2. Erskine tied the game on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a double took the lead 6-3.

Justin Mee knocked a two-run double to bring it to 7-5 in the fifth. Phil Dukes took the mound for ASU in sixth to retire the side. The Jags got two runners on the sixth, but flew out to end the inning and leave Erskine on top for the win, despite scoring one in the seventh.

Curtis Parker (0-3) got the loss in 2.2 innings, surrendering four hits for seven runs. Matt Gunter (1-1) took the win in 2.0 innings, limiting ASU to two hits for three runs. Clay Tucker went 2-for-3 in game two for the Jags, while Mee and South each went 2-for-4.

ASU heads to Francis Marion on April 19 for a PBC weekend series starting on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
