Newberry Survives ASU, 3-1

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Augusta State outhit Newberry, but the Wolves were able to respond on the game's lone error for a 3-1 win Wednesday night at Smith Road Complex.

The Wolves (11-6) took a 3-0 lead on the Jaguars (5-9) in the bottom of the third after two lead-off singles got things going. Wesley Camp reached on an ASU infield error to load the bases and Cole Cromer hit a bases-clearing double off ASU starter Dylan Wall (0-1) for three unearned runs.

Wall went 7.0 innings to give up six hits for three unearned runs. Wolves' starter Brandon Ahrens (3-0) took the win in 9.0 innings of work to give up eight hits for one run and striking out three.

The Jags plated one in the top of the sixth when junior JD Sabo singled and stole second. Junior transfer Nate Crown walked and freshman Hunter Boose knocked an RBI-single to left field to score Sabo for ASU's only run of the game.

Freshman David Bermudez relieved Wall in 1.0 innings of work to allow one hit and deal a lone strikeout. In the bottom of the eighth Bermudez stranded Wolves runners in scoring position when he earned two groundballs and a strikeout on a full count.

The Jags were unable to capitalize in their half of the ninth – leading to a 3-1 Newberry win. ASU left eight runners on base and had the games only error. Sabo went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, while Boose was 2-for-4.

The Jags play a three-game series at Stillman starting a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar 2 at 12:00 p.m.
