Anderson Tops Jaguars

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson jumped out to an early lead Thursday afternoon and registered a 13-2 non-conference victory over Augusta State at Memorial Stadium. The contest marked the first road game of the season for the Jaguars.

The Trojans (3-6) racked up 17 hits off three different Jaguar hurlers and took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. ASU (3-4) got a run back in the top of the third on JD Sabo's RBI-triple that plated Andrew Cooley.

Anderson answered with a run in its half of the fourth and added four more in the fifth. The Trojans then tacked on five runs in the eighth for the final margin.

Sabo and Seth Foster each went 2-for-4 to pace the Jags. Jeff Rice jacked a solo home run to center in the sixth inning for the Jags' only other run. The homer was the first of the season for the squad.

Paul Como went 5-for-5 for the Trojans, while Chris Ayers was 3-for-5 and drove in four runs.

Stephen McKnight (1-1) notched the win, allowing two runs and five hits in 5.2 innings.

ASU freshman starter Trey McAvoy (0-1) took the loss. He was charged with seven hits and six earned runs in 4.0 innings with three walks and a strikeout. Jaime Suggs gave up two runs and five hits in 3.0 innings of relief and freshman Phil Dukes made his collegiate debut in the eighth, surrendering five hits and one earned run with a strikeout and a walk.

The Jags kick off their PBC schedule this weekend when they host Armstrong Atlantic in a three-game series at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Saturday's single game is slated for a 2:00 p.m., first pitch, with Sunday's doubleheader scheduled to get underway at noon.
