Jags Roll Past Wolves, 7-2

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State (3-1) earned its third win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 win over the West Georgia Wolves (3-2) at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Junior left-hander Kip Custer (2-0) went 7.0 innings in the win, giving up one earned run on six hits. UWG starter Chase Riemer (1-1) took the loss with 5.0 innings pitched to allow four runs on five hits.

The Wolves went up 1-0 off an RBI double from freshman John Rhodes in the top of the second, but Custer got out of the inning on a line-drive double play that left two on base.

ASU senior Seth Foster singled to start the second inning and junior Jeff Rice took a hit-by-pitch. Freshman Justin Mee reached on a fielder's choice, putting Foster out at third and bringing up juniors Kevin Dodson and JD Sabo. The two hit back-to-back singles over the second basemen's head to give the Jags a 2-1 lead.

Custer retired the side in the second and left one on base in the third, getting UWG sophomore Harrison Waller to rollover to third base.

The Jags added two more runs in the fifth when junior transfer Nate Crown walked with two outs and freshman Hunter Boose doubled off the left-field wall to score Crown from first. An error from the Wolves' third baseman scored Boose from second for a 4-1 ASU lead.

Junior righty Cody Skinner came on in relief for the Wolves in the sixth, with Rice introducing him to the game with a single. Dodson doubled to score Rice and a base-hit bunt from Sabo put runners on first and third. Freshman Lance Mangrum hit into a fielder's choice that scored Dodson giving ASU a 6-1 lead.

Senior right-hander Zach Breaux relieved Custer in the eighth to give up an unearned run, but a groundball double play got him out of the inning. ASU went up 7-2 when Crown singled up the middle to score Sabo - who singled for his fourth hit of the day. Sabo went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, while Boose, Foster, Rice and Dodson all had two hits - with Dodson adding two RBIs.

Getting a lineout and popup to start the ninth inning, Breaux walked one before freezing UWG's final batter for a strikeout to end the game. ASU outhit the Wolves 13-8 and had one less error.

The Jags meet the Wolves tomorrow, Sunday Feb. 10 at LOS for a series ending doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
