AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Opening day is set for the 2013 Augusta State Baseball season, with the first pitch slated for Friday, Feb. 1 in the annual season opener against the Carson-Newman Eagles at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

After a full fall practice regiment, the team took a brief pause for the holiday break and returned for spring practice the day students came back to class.

"Spring practice will give us around 19 days to get back into the swing of things and be ready for opening day against Carson-Newman," said fourth-year ASU head coach Chris Cooper. "The guys really worked hard this fall in the classroom and on the field and hopefully they continued that hard work over the holidays."

Cooper returns nine position players, with four starters coming back. Ten new position players, consisting of freshmen and transfers, have provided a competitive offseason for the team. The pitching corps will see 11 returnees and welcome six new faces.

"With a strong core of returners coming back and the mix of junior college guys and freshmen we have brought in, everyone in the program is looking forward to getting underway," Cooper said.

The Feb. 1 opening game is part of a three-game series that concludes with a doubleheader at LOS on Saturday, Feb. 2. The first series kicks off a 50-game schedule where the Jaguars will play 27 home games, including 19 contests at Lake Olmstead Stadium, and 23 away.
