Newman Tennis Center (NTC), which opened in 1981, was built through a collaboration between the City of Augusta and the Department of Natural Resources, and a Land and Water Use Grant. NTC is named for Pop Newman who was the Mayor of Augusta at the time and who helped coordinate the project.

NTC underwent a $125,000 renovation in October 2014 to redo all the surfaces of all 18 courts.

NTC was operated by Augusta Tennis Center Inc. (formerly located behind Daniel Village) from the opening day until 1988, when it was leased to Augusta College (now Augusta University). In July of 1997, operational control of NTC came under the Augusta Recreation, Parks & Facilities Department.

NTC plays host to 12 USTA sanctioned tournaments each year and many more high school, collegiate, and private tennis activities that promote the growth of tennis in our community. NTC has been awarded the USTA Large Public Facility of the Year Award in 1986 and 1996.

The Georgia State Junior Closed (held in August) has received the Junior Tournament of the Year Award from the Georgia Tennis Association in 1986 and 1996. Over 100,000 visitors come through the gates of NTC each year to produce an economic impact on the community of over two million dollars each year.
